Yes, think of the Amplidyne as just a big mechanical transistor.  I small input can control a large power source to load.  This isn't a relay, because it can control the output linearly.

Ingenious little device.  I suppose we need to investigate it.  What I'm curious about is if the force required to turn it on & off exceeds the pull force it is able to produce.  If the switching force is lower than the pulling force, I'm most certain this concept can be used as a generator, maybe a "highly efficient" one at that.
