Hi guys, So being a novice i thought id start with something slightly easier, iv been reading the 2200 pages you guys said (no ware near finished hahaha) but i thought id have a go at some practical. from knowing nothing last week to building this should be pretty funny :D im looking at some capacitors on ebay, that are like 1000 volts but are really low on farads they are like 0.0002 micro farads or something stupid, to get this thing to work, do i need the voltage to be high or farads or both? I dont really understand farads (all i know is its the measurement of storage stored in a capacitor?), could some one please shed some light?

Many thanks Ross

Ross, I'm using photo plash caps.

http://compare.ebay.com/like/350478113713?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&_lwgsi=y

like that.
your looking for the most amount of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joule

so you will need to learn some math to understand this stuff.

im not going to be much help with that... but that's what the Internet is all about!

:)

hope it helps

Sorry to keep bothering you. haha, so iv done a couple of quick calculations and worked yours out to be like 6.5 joules each, would i be correct in saying that this one is around 55 joules?

  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1pc-Rubycon-330V-1000uF-Photo-Flash-Capacitor-New-/190475822667?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c593e664b#ht_664wt_702

There for a 3 of these would be the equivalent of your 24 caps?

Thanks for your time and patience :D

This is my mini rail gun, its a simple and it works, the info is at the beginning of the video.
Greetings Russ et al,
You're a (prolific) 'Mad Scientist' indeed Russ (< 8)

I'm wondering why the rail gun works with NonMagnetic materials such as copper?
In some of the slow motions it sometimes looks like the spark/flash is originating from the exit end of the gun as opposed to the start of it?
There is a SUPER, SUPER DUPER VERY high speed camera out now!
How fast?
One can see LIGHT propagating with it !!!

Wouldn't that be great for quite a number of and a wide range of experiments to document and analyse numerous interactions that take place at very high speeds.

Also some scientists have been working on 'slowing down' light for a quite a while now. Her (team's?) initial demonstration apparatus was about the size of a large shoe box and slowed light down a VERY significant amount.  Don't remember the specs. but she has continued her research and is now able to STOP the light inside it and then allow it to resume when she 'releases' it! There is NO 'light source' inside her mechanism that could generate the light. It IS the SAME light that enters into her 'Magic 'Shoe (Light) Box'' that continues on when she releases it! NO idea how this one works, but that IS Fracking AMAZING !!!

Also there are now materials that have a NEGATIVE index of light refraction. Amongst other things, this will allow for optical microscopes that work at finer detail than the wave length of the light utilized!
They are having to rewrite Snell's Law because of this.

Heard of Plasmonics? This is a 'cloud of electrons' above a metal surface. This is literally 'Light on a (Metal) wire!' It can 'transmit' light that is 1/50 of the wave length of the source light !!!

These last two, along with a number of other developments will facilitate 'optical' computers with very significantly increased computing power and more efficient optical networks that utilize light.
Research has also brought about 'fiber optics' that have a significantly higher efficiency and thus greater capacity both in speed/volume of data transmission including enhanced multiplexing and greatly increased transmission distances without the need for as many InLine amplifiers. 'FTTD' (Fiber to the Door) aka 'the Last Mile', will be realistic with these technologies.

These will also allow for 'Moore's Law' to continue doubling computer power every 2 years as opposed to it being stalled as they had pretty well reached the limits with the wave lengths being used. R&D has shown that they can do this economically utilizing current manufacturing equipment and processes. (< 8)

There are already some 'permanent' RAM chips out that use the orientation of the Quantum spin.  Currently they are only binary. But these have the capacity to set and save MANY more discrete orientations on a single quantum particle: an electron I believe it is. Thus EACH quantum particle of  computer memories, and likely eventually CPUs as well, could readily have 24 different states! Do the Math. WOW: 8 GB squared versus 8 GB to the 24 power!!! Now THAT will make for unbelievably powerful (parallel) computers readily available. Eventually we each might have our own 'optical/quantum' personal computers with the power of current mini, main frame or even super computers!  Just imagine what a real 'super computer' scale device with this technology will be able to do! Hard to comprehend it really.

One more:  Plasma: aka the 'Fourth State of Matter' is generally (thought of being) in a form similar to a 'gaseous' state.  Scientists using an X-Ray laser a billion times more powerful than previous ones this year converted a tiny piece of tin foil into SOLID plasma at ~ 2,000,000 degrees Kelvin! As well as allowing for extending the knowledge of physics including Star formation and processes. This will aid in the development of realistic CLEAN virtually limitless power generation with Fusion energy. Quite a few years ago now scientists FINALLY managed to get more energy out of a Fusion reaction than they put into to it to initiate it.
In order to initiate a Fusion reaction, there has to be at least a temperature of 50,000,000 Kelvins for at least a couple of seconds.  How does one 'contain' material at such temperatures? With VERY powerful 'magnetic 'plasma bottles''  Some designs utilize Torus shapes and geometry to generate this VERY powerful, intense and concentrated magnetic flux field.
Hmmmm.. .  .    .   is this indicative of validation of some of the energy research being done with Torus transformer windings?

Heard of the 'Triple Point' of some substances such as water? Check it out. Mind blowing!   I'm wondering if this phenomenon only occurs with water or ???  I'd LOVE to hear someone explain how this is possible.

I know I utilized a lot of 'Exclamation Points!'
But really, these things ARE deserving of them!!!

Keep on Keeping on,

This is really fascinating, especially the parts of slowing down or stopping light and being able to make  quantum computer's  that use light for processing [ LIGHT SPEED] truly amazing stuff , I would like to hear more, Jeff.:D:P

Saw an old..old '50s video of rail gun concept. Use of coil in rod (cylindrical) configuration with a small aluminum ring. The smallest ring that had minimal gap produced the most momentum energy. This video also showed other coil uses with cold plate and melting metal or cooking. Anyhow, try the cylindrical version than the platform.
