'Deadly monster virus not safe in Rotterdam'

The laboratory in the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, where a very deadly variant of the bird flu virus is stored, is not safe. "From a security point of view, it is absolutely repugnant to mention that a mutated virus is used and stored in such an environment," said Ruud Peek, supplier of parts for extremely secure laboratories in De Telegraaf.

Erasmus MC is in the news worldwide, because researchers have developed a bird flu virus that spreads through air to mammals. Critics shudder about a biological time bomb.

It is currently being investigated whether disclosing the research data is desirable. US experts fear that this will throw detailed information into the wrong hands and that terrorists will use the virus as a biological weapon.

Ron Fouchier, professor of virology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, was commissioned to find out whether the H5N1 virus can cause a pandemic. He managed to make a highly contagious variant of the bird flu virus H5N1. This virus is rare in humans, but if someone is affected by the virus, it is often fatal. Around 500 people worldwide have died from bird flu, including a Dutch vet.

Read that again. It sure sounds like China has a problem keeping dangerous pathogens in test tubes where they belong, doesn’t it? And just how many “microbiology labs” are there in China that handle “advanced viruses like the novel coronavirus”?

It turns out that in all of China, there is only one. And this one is located in the Chinese city of Wuhan that just happens to be … the epicenter of the epidemic.
