The alchemists of old tried to use chemistry to cause nuclear transmutation, mixing various substances together in the hopes of creating something more valuable. It was the beginnings of modern chemistry... obviously, either none were successful (or we'd have heard about it), or they were successful and were secretive about their knowledge.

Nowadays we know that nuclear transmutation goes on all around us every day.

For example, in our sun, the proton-proton reaction causes 2 1H atoms to transmute into deuterium (2H), which combines with another 1H to create 3He. Then 2 3He atoms combine to create 2He and 2 1H atoms. So net, 6 1H atoms create one 2He atom and 2 1H atoms and give off 4.14 x 10-12 Joules of energy, at a rate of ~9.29 x1037 reactions per second.

For another example, when a cosmic ray in the form of a neutron enters our atmosphere, it hits the 14N in the atmosphere, transmuting it into 1 14C and 1 1H. Then each 14C atom combines with 2 8O atoms to create 14CO2.

Many of the transmutation processes are complicated, so knowledge of nuclear physics is necessary to figure out what elements will interact and at what energy levels... at least, it used to be that way. Dr. Alexander Parkhomov created a spreadsheet. The download page is now showing  404, but I was able to grab the spreadsheet before then. It's attached below.

So there are a great number of elements which will successfully interact with lead to transmute into platinum.

Now the only thing left to do is to figure out the procedure by which to most efficiently transmute any given element into any other given element... usually it's done via electrical discharge, but other methods might increase yield (by combining any of pressure, temperature or bombardment with protons, neutrons or electrons)

To produce electrons is easy enough... it's just electrical current.

To produce protons, use a device similar to the Cockroft / Walton device:


To produce neutrons takes a bit more work because you have to overcome the strong fundamental force... first you have to strip the electrons from 2He, leaving only the nucleus (two protons, two neutrons). This is done by hitting the 2He atom with sufficiently strong light to ionize it. Then hit the nucleus with strong x-ray energy to break apart the protons and neutrons, then attract away the protons with a DC-biased plate, leaving only the neutrons.

Or, you can create deuterium by electrolyzing water to remove the light water, leaving only the heavy water (deuterium), then adding more water and electrolyzing again, etc., etc... eventually you'll build up a large quantity of deuterium (this is the way the Nazis did it at the Vemork plant in Norway, before the Allies destroyed it).

Or keep the water at an exact temperature to evaporate the light water away (D2O boils at 101.4 C, whereas H2O boils at 99.97 C at atmospheric pressure... you can increase the evaporation rate by drawing a vacuum and running a lower temperature to save energy).

Or do both... first electrolyze, then evaporate. In normal water, there is only one deuterium atom for every 6400 hydrogen atoms, but deuterium is more prevalent in the residue of water used as an electrolyte. An analysis of the residues from the Vemork hydroelectric plant, a large-scale hydrogen production plant using electrolysis of water for ammonia production, showed a hydrogen/deuterium ratio of 48. So electrolyzing the water increases the hydrogen/deuterium ratio by 33.33 times, leaving less water to be evaporated later to further concentrate the heavy water.

Deuterium contains one proton and one neutron, so you can then use the above techniques to strip the protons away, leaving only the neutrons. Free neutrons have a half-life of ~14 minutes 42 seconds, so you need to continually produce them, Their decay involves the emission of a W boson from one of the down quarks within the neutron, converting the down quark into an up quark and the neutron into a proton; the W then decays into an electron and an electron antineutrino.

Here's a two-step process to make gold, using hydrogen, iron, manganese and lead. You also get nickel as an end product, so you'd have to separate them by heating them... nickel melts at 1728 K, gold melts at 1337 K.
