That is the nature of an STL file.  In solid modeling they call it a "dumb file", because it doesn't have any of the data that 3D modeling programs use to define it as a part.  That kind of data is also different between brands of 3D modeling programs.  If it was exported from Sketchup as a DXF or STP file, you would probably have better luck.  The free version of sketchup looks like it can only export in DAE or KMZ format as a 3D model.  Maybe your programs could import those types?

i also have know idea, what i go is what i got. if you can find some one that has sketchup pro then you should be good to go. export as DXF. but i currently cant do that with my version of sketchup.

i will help if you need my to try something.

i also would love to hear about your project. sounds cool.

one other idea is to install a " free trial " of sketchup pro. i believe in the past i had the option to export in other formats but now its gone. maybe that's why i had it for a bit.

might try that first.
