Found this little gizmo today. It's named the "Combined Rectifier". Apparently it was patented in Russia, which I haven't been able to locate.
I'm not exactly sure what is claimed in the patent, but it almost looks like it adds the voltage of the step-up transformer to the current of the matching transformer, which if correct, would give you more wattage out then consumed by the input. Also notice the diode on the input, which effectively supplies pulsed DC to the primaries.
