US Navy set to use sea water as fuel
Interesting. Now if they can figure out how to turn seawater into biscuits and gravy with a few tomahawk missiles on the side, they'll have it made.
This is too beautiful.
This marks the beginning of a new era.
Mind you, when the US Navy, no less, officially declares that they have found a way to turn seawater into fuel for their ships and aircraft, that itself is more than enough to spook the fossile fuel industry BIG TIME.
It's all over the news, I love it.
It also raises the really interesting questions, such as what source of energy will they use to power the process to start with?Quote This could mean that the energy extracted from the sea water is powerful enough to in fact produce fuel on demand in a closed loop.
They call it a game changer, I guess that would be putting it mildly.
All the sudden the US Navy has become the World's most powerful institution with regards to challenging status quo of the fossile fuel industry.
From now on not a single free energy related discovery will pose any threat whatsoever for the inventor him/herself.
So let it rip people

That means instead of relying on tankers, ships will be able to produce fuel at sea

Seems as though they got quite a long way to go before it becomes energy efficient enough for them to implement this on board ship.Quote http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/apr/10/game-changer-us-navy-can-now-turn-seawater-jet-fue/
Who would like to send SECNAV an invitation to the forum........?
The process is extremely energy intensive at the moment (Defense One reported that it takes “twice as much electricity to convert the water into fuel components as the process yields in terms of power”), but scientists believe that within the next decade the process will become much more efficient.
Who would like to send SECNAV an invitation to the forum........?

When you see stuff like this from the government or military, keep the following in mind:
When they say, "We should have this operational within the next decade."
They mean, "We have been using this technology secretly for the past two decades."
It has never been about the technology, the control consists of two gates: The first gate is when the unwashed masses will hear about it and the second gate is when the useless eaters can have some of it.

It is a bit confusing as to just how far they've really come with regards to having a working unit up and running, which apparently turns seawater into a hydrocarbon liquid fuel by the looks of it.
It also seems as though they're fully aware of the relative inefficiency involved in the process so I really don't see how any ship could produce it's own fuel in the center of the middle ocean without the need for an additional energy source.
Otherwise we'd be talking OU, something that which no one wants to be associated with, atleast no official government body that is.

I think they are required to say that it takes more energy to product than they get out, even if it's a lie. I think it's all a game for them to try to flush out more people that come out of the wood work with the "missing secret" to increase the efficiency. Get them to contact the government directly with the answer, so that it can be quickly squished out of existence. What I think is most interesting, is that they are now saying they are working on it. Like Matt says they have had it for awhile, possibly in their tanks? It just guarantees in my head that they watch this and other forums like a hawk. What else do war mongers have to do but troll the net while they are at sea with out anything to blow up?
I just wish this whole seawater thing is on account of becoming independent of fossile fuel, just to make it meaningless for the middle east, russia, et al, to threaten to cut off supplies whenever something's going down there which makes the rest of the World start asking questions about it.
War has been the mother of however many inventions, it would be too beautiful if it also gave birth to that which in the end leads to peace on Earth, that to me would be the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, to build something that which takes away the very reason for starting wars in the first place.
