I wonder if he had ever thought about producing some hydrogen at the lower end, then put it in the float, then release it at the top end and feed it to a sterling engine or steam engine, to drive another generator or compressor?

Hydro energy is taken from water & transformed to electricity. It is efficient & can be used almost instantly. It also helps to decrease the global warming. Not only it is renewable, but it is also regarded a clean energy source because there are not harmful toxins emitted.
