RE ferrite cores disintegrating: Look into Permalloy or HyMu 80.

I'm working on a Hendershot build and found a 1930's telephone ringer box where the ringers are separate from the phone. When I disassembled it I found a "heel piece" connected to the magnet that was some kind of highly magnetic material. It is a light grey color on the outside and when I filed some clench pins off I scratched it and it is bright silver under the grey. I took it to the hardware store and asked them if they knew what it was and one guy said it might be nickel. He has several pins in his bones that are nickel and they give him fits going through airport security. I looked into it some more and discovered Permalloy which was invented around 1910 by a guy at Bell Labs. They used it for shielding submarine cables to Europe. Bell Labs, 1930's, and phone ringer cores? Probably so.

It's roughly 80% nickel and 20% iron but with some trace elements thrown in. It appears the ringer coil cores are the same material. It has extremely high permittivity. MuMetal is similar but slightly different blend with some molybdenum thrown in to make it more machinable. There's several variations.

The tie in with Hendershot, besides the ringer cores, is that it is used for shielding in aeronautical magnetic compasses to shield them from the magnetic fields of engine's electrical fields and other electrical components in the instrument panel even today. I'm pretty sure that was Hendershot's contribution to Lindberg's Atlantic crossing - an accurate magnetic compass in 1921. Most flyers of the day were saying Lindberg could land anywhere from Norway to North Africa depending on the winds but he hit France smack on.

Pricey stuff though. Unless you can find some antique telephone ringer coils. I think I paid about $30.00 for the ones I found on ebay.

I wonder why c-o-m-p-a-s-s comes out as compHole? Seems when I post the a-s-s gets replaced with Hole. Special feature?

compass, compass, compass.   Not doing it here.  Maybe someone has hacked your computer.

Testing typing in compass trespass assign

seems the problem is at your end,

maybe your end has an assHole trojan in it?

I didn't have the problem on any other sites or editing files on my computer. Russ fixed it and I edited the post. I edited when I first saw it but it posted the same way. I don't know what he changed. Maybe spelling correction?

Strange things happen on sites like these. I visit another site regularly and members there are always complaining about files gone missing and posts being edited. Can`t say it has ever happened to me. Maybe I never said anything worth editing.

You'd be surprised how close we live to the ragged edge in keeping this site running.  We got bit once before which forced our hand in changing to this forum software.  It could happen again at any moment.  The lesson is:  No matter how much you think you know about how to keep a computer running properly, there are others that know a lot more about how to scramble it.

I want to thank you for your work. We often take it for granted that the site will be there and be solid.

The last time I tried to run my own site it was up for about 20 minutes before it started getting pounded. I fought it for a year and decided that wasn't how I wanted to spend my time.

I've got a friend that works for a smallish (in banking terms) bank and web security is his full time job. They have 9 full time employees that do what he does 24/7/365.

Again, thanks for an excellent endeavor.

RE Akula: I looked at the videos again and have some doubts but putting that aside and taking it as shown, I think he might also be using a permalloy or mumetal armature. I got my HyMu80 in today and the grey color is there on his armature as well. I get some interesting images with my magnetic field viewing film using the radar magnetron magnet and the HyMu80 armature. Photos soon.

Another interesting thing is that the permalloy heel iron I got out of the 1930's telephone ringer assembly looks nearly the same color after all that time. It's a little darker but then I'm pretty sure it's Permalloy rather than HyMu80.

Another thing I think fits the Hendershot Generator is that permalloy has very, very low remanence so the armature and coil cores won't become magnetized after long exposure to a magnetic field. The heal iron I removed from the 1930's telephone ringer assembly was attached to a magnet and once removed had no magnetic field that I could detect. That would be important for long term use of the Hendershot Generator as opposed to, say, steel or iron that would become magnetized after some period of time.

The low remanence would also aide in magnetic field switching at higher frequencies.

Got me thinking here...

If you are subjecting a core to a magnetic field, it's important how balanced the input is.  For example, I have an old phillips tip screw driver I have used for many years.  Shortly after I got it, I swiped it across a powerful horseshoe magnet so the screws would stick to it, making it easier to use.  It has stayed magnetized all this time until yesterday, when I stuck it in a tiny little solenoid core, just to get a feel for how strong the field was.  That little core completely degaussed my screw driver.  So even steel with its relatively high remanence can be dealt with, provided the magnetizing signal is symmetrical.  With pulsed single polarity DC, obviously this would work no more than a half dozen cycles, then the steel core would become saturated.

I believe that whether you have two or a million similar d.c. pulses of current
magnetizing a ferromagnetic core
the remnance and peak flux (or flux density) will be the same,
the first pulse will magnetize from zero flux density (Bo)
to a peak flux density determined by current, coil and core,
after the first pulse ends there will be a certain remnant flux density (Brem),

ALL following pulses will change the flux from the remnant value (Brem)
to the peak flux density (Bmax)
and on removing the current will return to the same remnant value (Brem).

Photos of magnetic field of mild steel vs HyMu80 armature attached to radar magnetron magnet. Keep in mind that the center of the magnet is one polarity and both outer ends are the opposite polarity.

The mild steel is just some scrap I had laying around so it was rusted and I just wire brushed it. It's pitted.

I first tried with the armature just stuck to the magnet. I then drilled holes to attach it to the ringer coils. So there are photos of both the solid and drilled armatures.

Take a look at the sketch he draws and notice how he describes two of the coils, one being an anode and the other a cathode--interesting concept when applied to coils.

Maybe we need to look at this simple equation and determine which term can potentially draw energy from the ambient or have the material used in the device do it.
